Greater Noida: In a chilling case of dowry violence, a 28-year-old woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws in front of her six-year-old son after her family failed to fulfill a demand for ₹36 lakh. The incident took place on Saturday and has sparked widespread outrage after disturbing videos of the assault surfaced online.

The victim, identified as Nikki, had been married to Vipin since 2016. According to police, she was first brutally beaten by her husband and in-laws before being doused with an inflammable substance and set ablaze. Her young son, who witnessed the entire sequence, later recounted, “Meri mumma ke upar kuch dala, fir unko chanta mara fir lighter se aag laga di” (they poured something on my mother, slapped her and then set her on fire with a lighter).

Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, alleged that the murder was carried out because the family could not provide the demanded dowry. “They killed my sister for ₹36 lakh. She was hit on her head and neck, acid was thrown on her, and then she was burnt alive,” Kanchan said.

Following the attack, Nikki was rushed to Fortis Hospital and later referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital due to the severity of her burn injuries. However, she died before police could record her statement. “On August 21, we received a call from Fortis Hospital informing us about the woman. She was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital, but succumbed before we reached,” Additional DCP Greater Noida Sudhir Kumar told reporters.

Meanwhile, husband Vipin attempted to portray the incident as a suicide. Before his arrest, he posted pictures of Nikki on social media, writing emotional captions such as, “Why didn’t you tell me what happened? Why did you leave me? The world is calling me a killer, Nikki.” In another post with their son, he wrote, “I am ruined. I have nothing left.”
