Mumbai: In a bid to smoothen the ruffled feathers of the Maratha community, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday stated that his government is committed to providing Maratha reservation.
In a statement issued after chairing a high-level meeting on the issue, Thackeray said the government is consulting legal experts, community members and opposition parties so that the Maratha community can continue to enjoy the reservation benefits. He asked political parties to refrain from instigating the Maratha community as such actions would be dealt with a firm hand.
This comes days after the Supreme Court ordered a stay on the Maharashtra Government’s law, providing reservation to Maratha community in jobs and education.
Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar has said that the government is considering bringing in an ordinance so that there is no unrest among the community.
Earlier today, demonstrations were held in Jalna and Solapur districts against the Supreme Court’s order. The representatives of Maratha Kranti Morcha held a meeting in Mumbai and decided that a breach of privilege motion should be moved against Advocate General, Ashutosh Kumbhakoni for gross negligence in defending the reservation for Maratha community.
