Handwara: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Department of Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara successfully performed its first Single-Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILS) on a 19-year-old female patient diagnosed with symptomatic cholelithiasis.

This milestone procedure marks the first-ever SILS surgery in Jammu & Kashmir utilizing the Dapri Technique, developed by Prof. Giovanni Dapri of Italy, a world-renowned expert and pioneer in single-incision laparoscopic surgery. The innovative technique enables surgeons to operate through a single minimal incision, offering maximum precision, minimal postoperative pain, and nearly scarless recovery for the patient.

The surgery was led by Dr. Jan M. Rather, Assistant Professor and Senior Consultant, supported by Dr. Muzaffer and Dr. Asif from the Department of Surgery. The Anaesthesia team was headed by Dr. Tahira, Associate Professor, assisted by Dr. Reyaz Qadri and the Operation Theatre staff, whose coordinated efforts ensured the success of the procedure.

The surgical team extended heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Giovanni Dapri for his guidance and mentorship. They also thanked the Principal of GMC Handwara, FA/CAO GMC Handwara, and the Medical Superintendent of the Associated Hospital GMC Handwara for their constant support and encouragement.

This successful operation represents a major leap forward for minimally invasive surgery in north Kashmir, reinforcing GMC Handwara’s commitment to innovation, patient safety, and clinical excellence.
