Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday held a massive Secretariat Gherao protest in Srinagar, with thousands of party workers and supporters taking to the streets to voice their opposition to the policies and performance of the National Conference (NC)-led government.
The protest was led by J&K BJP Legislature Party Leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma. Along with senior party leaders and hundreds of workers, Sharma marched towards the Civil Secretariat as protesters raised slogans against the NC government and demanded accountability on issues affecting the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
Among the prominent BJP leaders present were BJP State President Sat Sharma, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, BJP General Secretary (Organisation) for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Ashok Koul, BJP State General Secretary Mohammad Anwar Khan, BJP Vice President Shahnaz Ganie, State Secretaries Arif Raja and Mudasir Wani, spokesperson Altaf Thakur, All Cells Co-Incharge Bilal Parray, and State Executive Member Mohammad Amin Shah.
Senior leaders Reyaz Ahmad Lone, Showkat Shah, Mir Ahan, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, Barkat Ali Shah and Manzoor Ahmad Bhat were also present, along with party office-bearers, elected representatives and workers from different parts of the region.
Addressing the gathering, BJP leaders accused the National Conference government of failing to fulfil the promises it made to the people during the elections. They alleged that the government had failed to provide effective governance and address several public concerns.
The BJP leadership particularly raised issues related to rising electricity tariffs, unemployment, inadequate development, poor public services and the alleged failure to fulfil electoral commitments.
The party said the large turnout at the Secretariat Gherao reflected what it described as growing public dissatisfaction with the functioning of the NC government. BJP leaders said the party would continue to raise issues affecting people’s daily lives and hold the government accountable.
The protest also highlighted the BJP’s organisational presence and grassroots mobilisation in Jammu & Kashmir. Party workers expressed their resolve to intensify what they described as a democratic struggle against the government’s alleged failure to deliver good governance.
The BJP leadership reiterated that the party would continue to stand with the people and raise issues concerning development, employment, affordable electricity and transparent and accountable governance.
