A Puerto Rican jury delivered a verdict on Friday, finding former Olympic boxer Felix Verdejo Sanchez guilty of kidnapping and killing his pregnant girlfriend, Keishla Rodriguez. The tragic incident occurred in April 2021, when Ms. Rodriguez was abducted and thrown off a bridge in San Juan, leading to her death. Her body was later discovered in a lagoon in the capital of the US territory.

The jury reached their decision after a one-month trial, charging the 30-year-old boxer with several crimes, including kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, intentionally killing an unborn child, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The court documents revealed a chilling account of the crime. Verdejo executed a premeditated plan to murder Ms. Rodriguez and her unborn child by luring her into his car, assaulting her, injecting her with drugs, and then tying her to a cement block with metal wire. He, along with his co-defendant Luis Antonio Cadiz-Martinez, threw her into the lagoon from a bridge in San Juan. Later, they both jumped into the lagoon to ensure the victims’ deaths.

US Attorney Stephen Muldrow expressed support for Keishla Rodriguez Ortiz’s family and the community seeking justice for this heartless and violent act. Felix Verdejo, who is married and has a young daughter, showed no emotion as the verdict was read, while Ms. Rodriguez’s family embraced and grieved.

The former boxer, who had denied the charges, was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on May 2, 2021. His sentencing is scheduled for November 3, and he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the felonies he was convicted of.
