Mumbai: Om Prakash Chautala, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and a prominent figure in Indian politics, passed away on Friday, December 20, at the age of 89. The veteran leader, a key figure in the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), breathed his last at his residence in Gurugram.

Chautala’s political career spanned several decades, marked by numerous terms as Haryana’s Chief Minister. He first assumed the top post on December 2, 1989, but his initial tenure was short-lived, lasting only 171 days. In 1990, he briefly returned as the state’s CM for five days, before assuming a more prolonged term on March 22, 1991. Chautala went on to serve a full term as Chief Minister from 2000 to 2005, cementing his influence in Haryana politics.

The Chautala family has long been a significant political force in Haryana. Om Prakash Chautala’s father, Chaudhary Devi Lal, was a two-time Chief Minister of Haryana. Devi Lal served his first term from 1977 to 1979 and again in June 1987, holding office for two years and 165 days. The family’s legacy has continued with the third generation actively involved in Haryana’s political landscape.

Despite the enduring influence of the Chautala family, it currently stands politically divided. Om Prakash Chautala’s son, Ajay Singh Chautala, formed the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), marking a departure from the INLD. Meanwhile, his second son, Abhay Singh Chautala, has remained loyal to his father’s legacy and continues to align himself with the INLD.

Chautala’s death has left a void in the political scene of Haryana, where he was a towering figure for decades. His contributions to the state’s politics will be remembered, especially by those who have been influenced by his leadership. As the state mourns his passing, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, acknowledging his years of public service and the political dynasty he built.

The family’s political divide adds to the complexity of the legacy left by Om Prakash Chautala, with both the INLD and JJP now vying for influence in the region. As Haryana grapples with the loss of one of its most prominent political figures, the future of the Chautala family’s political dominance remains uncertain.
