Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil left Antarwali Sarati in Jalna for Mumbai on Tuesday, surrounded by a large number of supporters and a massive convoy of vehicles.
Jarange began his journey as his indefinite hunger strike entered its 18th day. A large crowd gathered at the protest site to see him off as he prepared to travel towards Mumbai.
Videos from Antarwali Sarati showed Jarange paying his respects to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj before leaving. He also visited a Hanuman temple, while women supporters performed aarti and aukshan for him.
Massive Convoy Heads Towards Mumbai
A huge convoy accompanied Jarange as he left Jalna. The vehicles included several SUVs, police vehicles and ambulances.
A tractor carrying a life-size statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was also seen with the convoy.
Jarange appeared weak after several days of fasting and was supported by his aides while leaving the protest site.
The convoy is expected to travel through Beed, Ahilyanagar and Pune on its way to Mumbai. Patoda is expected to be the first halt.
Government Says It Is Working On Maratha Demands
Jarange’s Mumbai march comes amid assurances from political leaders that the Maratha community’s demands are being considered.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government was working on the community’s demands and would try to provide reservation without affecting the rights of OBCs or other communities.
Shinde also appealed to protesters to remain patient and avoid disrupting Ganeshotsav celebrations in Mumbai.
“The government is working on your requirements and has taken the matter positively,” Shinde said, urging protesters not to disturb the festival.
Jarange Says He Will Continue His Fight
Jarange has accused political leaders, particularly those in the government, of “cheating” the Maratha community.
He has appealed to his supporters to remain united and peaceful while continuing the agitation.
The activist has also said that he will not back down from the demand, maintaining that his fight is for the future of children from the Maratha community.
Mumbai Protest Permission Still Pending
Jarange has planned to continue his agitation in Mumbai, with Azad Maidan proposed as the venue.
However, permission for the protest remains uncertain. Mumbai Police have rejected earlier applications, while Jarange’s representatives have submitted a fresh request seeking permission for 50 people.
Jarange has said he will approach the Bombay High Court if the police reject the latest application.
With Jarange now on his way to Mumbai and a massive group of supporters accompanying him, attention is focused on his arrival in the city and the government’s next move on the Maratha reservation demand.
