Srinagar: On the occasion of National Unity Day, Vilgam Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles on Sunday cultural events along with Wushu, Karate display, and the final of ongoing Unity Cup Cricket Tournament were organised at Haphruda.
The main purpose of organizing the Unity Cup was to engage and elevate the sportsman spirit and brotherhood amidst the youth and to identify the natural talent. The celebrations were planned for the entire month of October which was kickstarted by the ‘Pedal For Peace’ cycling race on October 3.
The event witnessed participation of more than 40 cyclists. In order to promote the noble cause of women empowerment, ‘Unity Run for Fun’ was organised on October 27 in which 142 girls actively took part in the event. The Unity Cup Cricket tournament commenced from October 16.
A total of 24 local teams competed in the knockout series of matches with the Lord Gushi team emerging as the overall champions. The event witnessed a huge crowd of spectators and was also live streamed on Social Media platforms. During the event chief guests felicitated winners and runners up of the cricket team competition.
Tahira Begum, the female covid warrior of the area who was instrumental in covid vaccination in the area going Door to door and first three winners of Run for Unity which was conducted on October 27.
The event was attended by esteemed guests like Danish Manzoor, the best male athlete of Tokey memorial open taekwondo championship (Kyorugi & Poomsae) held in April and Abid Nabi, famous Ranji Trophy Cricket player of Jammu and Kashmir.
Brigadier A K Pandey, Commander, 8 Sector Rashtriya Rifles graced the occasion and interacted with the local population and highlighted the importance of peace, tranquillity and development in the area which during old times was famous for numerous military operations owing to the presence of militants.
He congratulated all the people of the Taratpura Block for bringing out positive change in the area and assured of continuing the excellent friendship bond between the military and the Awam (people).
