New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) convened a high-level meeting on Friday with heads of key enforcement agencies to ensure a fair, transparent, and hassle-free conduct of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, brought together officials from 17 central and state departments, who provided insights and recommendations to strengthen electoral processes. Bihar’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) also participated via video conference, along with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.
Officials discussed strategies to curb illegal practices such as the movement of cash, liquor, drugs, and other inducements aimed at influencing voters. The panel also deliberated on countering fake news, which could potentially disrupt the election process, and on monitoring covert expenditures by candidates and political parties.
The committee emphasized robust intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation to prevent financial and logistical misconduct. Measures to intercept smuggled goods, cash, drugs, and counterfeit currency at inter-state and international borders were also part of the discussions.
Participating departments included the CBDT, CBIC, ED, DRI, CEIB, FIU-IND, RBI, IBA, NCB, RPF, CISF, BSF, CRPF, SSB, BCAS, AAI, and the Department of Posts. The ECI highlighted its commitment to making the electoral process accessible and inclusive for all citizens.
Special provisions have been planned to assist senior citizens and differently-abled voters, such as ground-floor polling stations, priority queues, and wheelchair facilities. Additionally, the Commission is addressing concerns related to the identification of burqa-clad women to ensure their voting rights while maintaining security and fairness, a topic that has seen significant political debate.
