New Delhi: In a bid to ensure transparency and accountability during political campaigns, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued an advisory to political parties ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. The advisory, released on Thursday, urges parties to properly disclose and label any AI-generated synthetic content used during the election campaign.

This move comes in the wake of multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for allegedly uploading AI-generated videos and images of prominent political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other BJP leaders. According to reports from Hindustan Times, a total of five FIRs were lodged, with four related to the use of AI-generated content, and a fifth against AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal for making derogatory remarks against Purvanchalis.

The Election Commission’s advisory aims to prevent the misuse of technology to mislead voters and spread misinformation. The ECI has emphasized that political parties should be transparent about the origin of such content and clearly label it as AI-generated. This directive is in line with the Commission’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and safeguard voters from being misinformed by manipulated or fabricated content.

In the advisory, the Election Commission has also reminded political parties of their responsibility to adhere to the Model Code of Conduct, ensuring that campaign strategies remain ethical and fair. The ECI’s move highlights the growing role of technology in modern-day elections and the need for regulations to keep pace with digital advancements.
