New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic engagement, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Friday met Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi, underscoring India’s steadfast commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. His remarks appeared to be a subtle reference to Pakistan’s recent air strikes in Kabul targeting Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts.
During the high-profile meeting, Jaishankar highlighted India’s deep interest in Afghanistan’s development and progress and reaffirmed the longstanding India-Afghanistan partnership. He described Muttaqi’s visit as a key step in strengthening bilateral ties and boosting cooperation in multiple sectors.
India’s humanitarian support to Afghanistan, particularly during crises, was a major focus. Jaishankar recalled how India had delivered relief aid within hours to earthquake-hit regions last month and announced plans to assist in reconstruction efforts for affected homes.
He also highlighted India’s ongoing contributions to Afghanistan’s healthcare and nutrition needs, promising MRI and CT scan machines, immunisation vaccines, and cancer medicines, along with a fresh consignment of food assistance to Kabul.
“Excellency, as a first responder, Indian relief materials were delivered to the earthquake sites within hours of the disaster last month,” Jaishankar said. “We would like to contribute to the reconstruction of residences in the affected areas.”
