‘Fragile Five’ to Global Power: How India’s Economy Changed, PM Modi Recalls Journey on Independence Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on Saturday to highlight India’s economic progress, recalling a time when the country was described as part of the “Fragile Five”.

Modi said India has moved far beyond that label and has emerged as a major global economy. But what did “Fragile Five” actually mean, and why was India included?

What Was the ‘Fragile Five’?

The term “Fragile Five” was coined by analysts at Morgan Stanley in 2013. It referred to five emerging economies that were considered vulnerable to sudden changes in global financial conditions.

The five countries were:

  • India
  • Brazil
  • Indonesia
  • South Africa
  • Turkey

The term became widely discussed when investors were worried about the impact of a possible reduction in US monetary stimulus.

Why Was India Considered Vulnerable?

At the time, India was facing several economic challenges. These included a high current-account deficit, elevated inflation, pressure on the rupee and a strong dependence on foreign investment.

These factors made the economy more exposed to changes in global investor confidence and sudden movements of international capital.

The “Fragile Five” was therefore not an official international ranking. It was an analytical term used to describe economies seen as particularly vulnerable to external financial shocks.

Why Did PM Modi Mention It?

More than a decade later, Modi referred to the label to highlight the change in India’s economic position.

Speaking from the Red Fort, he said the efforts of Indians had helped the country move from being associated with the “Fragile Five” to becoming a major economy.

The reference was part of his wider Independence Day message about India’s economic growth, self-reliance and the country’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047.

From Economic Vulnerability to Global Ambition

The “Fragile Five” label reflected concerns about India’s economic vulnerabilities in 2013. Modi’s reference to it in 2026 was aimed at showing the contrast between that period and India’s present economic ambitions.

His speech presented this transformation as one of the major developments of the past 12 years and linked it to India’s broader goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.
