Former US President Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize following his pivotal role in brokering the historic Abraham Accords treaty during his presidency. Republican congresswoman Claudia Tenney put forward Trump’s name for the prestigious award, citing the groundbreaking nature of the accords and their potential to foster peace in the Middle East.
The Abraham Accords, signed in September 2020, marked a significant milestone in international diplomacy by normalizing relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Subsequently, Morocco and Sudan also joined the agreements, signaling a new era of cooperation and stability in the region.
Tenney emphasized Trump’s instrumental role in facilitating these accords, challenging the conventional wisdom that lasting peace in the Middle East was unattainable without a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She lauded Trump’s leadership in disproving this notion and highlighted the significance of his contributions to global peace efforts.
The nomination comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, underscored by the recent drone strike that claimed the lives of three US soldiers. This is not the first time Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Previously, he received nominations in 2018 and 2020 for his role in global conflict resolution and efforts to end endless wars. Laura Huhtasaari, a member of the right-wing Swedish Finns Party, nominated him in 2021, citing his commitment to dialogue and negotiations as well as internal stability in the United States.
Despite the controversy surrounding his presidency, Trump’s nomination reflects the acknowledgment of his impact on international affairs, particularly in the realm of peacebuilding. If awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump would join the ranks of other US presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama, who have received this esteemed honor in the past.
