In a significant turn of events, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has decided to revoke the suspension of 11 opposition MPs who were earlier found guilty of breach of privilege by the House panel. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of heightened political tension and anticipation surrounding the upcoming special address of President Droupadi Murmu to both Houses of Parliament.
The suspended members, including prominent figures from various opposition parties such as Congress, CPI, DMK, and CPIM, were facing the consequence of their alleged breach of privilege and contempt of the Council of States. Among them are names like Jebi Mather, L Hanumanthaiah, Neeraj Dangi, Rajmani Patel, Kumar Ketkar, GC Chandrasekhar, Binoy Viswam, Sandosh Kumar P, Mohamad Abdulla, John Brittas, and AA Rahim.
The decision to lift their suspension comes at a crucial juncture, as the House panel recognized that the barred MPs would miss out on attending the special address by President Droupadi Murmu scheduled for Wednesday. This move signals a willingness to prioritize parliamentary decorum while ensuring that all elected representatives have the opportunity to participate in significant proceedings.
The winter session of Parliament witnessed a tumultuous period, with a staggering 146 MPs facing suspension from both Houses due to various infractions. The security lapse in the heavily fortified building further exacerbated the situation, leading to stringent measures being taken against those deemed responsible.
While the suspension period for 132 MPs ended on December 29 with the prorogation of both houses, the fate of the remaining 14 MPs, including three Lok Sabha members, remained uncertain. The decision to revoke the suspension of the 11 Rajya Sabha MPs is a step towards reconciliation and restoring normalcy within the parliamentary framework.
As the nation gears up for the curtailed Budget session ahead of the general elections, the reinstatement of these MPs underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and fostering constructive dialogue within the legislative arena. It is hoped that this gesture will pave the way for a more harmonious and productive parliamentary session, wherein the voices of all elected representatives are heard and respected.
