Delhi: As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, is reportedly considering fielding Shahrukh Pathan, a key accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, as a candidate from the Seelampur constituency. According to an India TV report, Delhi AIMIM president Shoaib Jamei recently met with Shahrukh Pathan’s family on December 23, fueling speculations about his potential candidacy.

Jamei took to social media to share the details of the meeting, writing, “Yesterday we met Shahrukh Pathan’s mother at his home. A delegation of Delhi Majlis (AIMIM) met his family and discussed their situation and legal aid. This small step of ours in the campaign for justice in Delhi will encourage many families whose children are in jail for years without trial.”

Pathan gained national attention during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, particularly after a viral photo showed him pointing a gun at a policeman. He was arrested and has been in jail ever since, facing charges related to the violence that shook the national capital. In October, the Delhi High Court denied him bail.
