Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday acquitted former Congress leader and ex-Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar in a case linked to allegations of instigating violence during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in parts of west Delhi. The case related specifically to incidents reported from the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas of the capital.
The decision was delivered by a special court dealing with riot-related cases. The judge announced the acquittal in open court, stating that detailed reasons would be provided in a written order at a later stage.
The case had focused on accusations that Kumar played a role in provoking mobs during the violence that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Earlier proceedings had narrowed the charges against him to offences connected with rioting and promoting communal hostility, while more serious accusations such as murder and criminal conspiracy had already been dropped during the trial.
The investigation into these incidents was reopened decades after the riots, following directions to re-examine old cases. A special investigation team later filed two separate cases based on complaints from affected families in west Delhi. These complaints related to killings that took place in November 1984, during the peak of the violence.
Despite Thursday’s relief in this particular matter, Sajjan Kumar remains behind bars. He is currently serving a life sentence awarded in a separate 1984 riots case connected to the deaths of two Sikh men in another part of Delhi. In that verdict, the trial court ruled that while the crime was extremely serious, it did not meet the legal standard required for the death penalty.
