AIMIM Names Vijay Ubale as BMC Group Leader After Surprise Clean Sweep in M-East Ward

Mumbai: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has appointed newly elected corporator Vijay Ubale as its group leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), marking a key organisational move after the party’s strong showing in the recent civic elections.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by a senior AIMIM leader through social media, days after the party secured eight seats in the January 15 BMC polls. With this result, the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party has emerged as a decisive force in Mumbai’s M-East ward, a region long dominated by established political players.

Ubale, who contested from ward number 140, registered a decisive victory with a margin of nearly 5,000 votes. His win has drawn particular attention as he is a Hindu candidate elected from a constituency with a largely Muslim and migrant population, highlighting a cross-community mandate and a shift in local political preferences.

The M-East ward, which includes Govandi, Deonar, Shivaji Nagar and Mankhurd, has historically struggled with poor civic indicators. Despite being home to thousands of residents, the area consistently ranks at the bottom in terms of infrastructure, healthcare, education and sanitation. A large section of the population lives in informal housing, and the ward also hosts the massive Deonar dumping ground, one of Mumbai’s most persistent environmental challenges.

Observers note that AIMIM’s success comes against the backdrop of strong anti-incumbency sentiments against previous representatives and growing public dissatisfaction with both regional and national parties. While some analysts attribute the victory to vote fragmentation, others see it as a clear expression of voters’ desire for new leadership and tangible development.

The newly elected AIMIM team in the BMC includes an equal number of women and men, a composition the party says reflects its commitment to inclusive representation. Party leaders have indicated that their immediate focus will be on long-neglected civic issues such as waste management, slum redevelopment, healthcare access and basic infrastructure.

Civic activists say the real test now lies ahead. With the M-East ward recording some of the lowest civic spending in Mumbai and sharp cuts in slum improvement funds in recent years, expectations from the new corporators are high. Residents hope that the fresh mandate will translate into visible improvements and long-term solutions for one of the city’s most underserved regions.
