Delhi: In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Congress has announced plans to field its veteran leader Alka Lamba against the AAP’s candidate Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency, according to India TV reports. This decision is part of Congress’ effort to contest a significant number of seats, having finalised 27 more candidates on Tuesday.

Along with Lamba’s candidacy, Congress has also selected Farhad Suri for Jangpura, Rajesh Lilothia for Seemapuri, and Aasim Ahmad for Matia Mahal, sources close to the party revealed. These choices are seen as part of the Congress’ broader strategy to strengthen its position in the national capital.

Meanwhile, Congress is expected to make significant promises in its election manifesto, including a financial commitment of Rs 3,000 per month for women and 400 units of free electricity to households. These proposals are in line with the party’s push to address the issues of women’s empowerment and affordability of basic services.

The Congress party’s efforts to bolster its ranks were further highlighted by the recent joining of former AAP MLAs Asif Ahmad Khan and Devinder Sehrawat. This move has stirred political waters as it signals a strengthening of Congress’ position against both the AAP and BJP in the run-up to the elections.

In a recent press statement, Delhi Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely reiterated that since Arvind Kejriwal’s rise to the position of Chief Minister in 2013, Congress has always maintained that both the BJP and AAP mislead Delhi’s citizens with false promises. “The AAP has failed to fulfill its promises to the people of Delhi, and now they have become partners in misleading the public,” Lovely stated.

On Monday, the Delhi Congress also held a crucial meeting to discuss its manifesto. The city unit chief emphasized that Congress only makes promises that it can keep, drawing a sharp contrast with the often-criticized electoral promises of both AAP and BJP.

In an earlier development, Congress had announced its first list of 21 candidates, including Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Sandeep will be contesting from the New Delhi constituency, a seat currently held by Arvind Kejriwal, who had defeated Sheila Dikshit in the 2013 elections to become Delhi’s Chief Minister for the first time.
