Chennai: In a major political development, former Deputy General Secretary of the DMK and Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ponmudy issued a public apology on Saturday for his controversial remarks allegedly targeting women and sects of Hinduism. His comments, described as “vulgar” and “disrespectful” by critics across party lines, have triggered a wave of condemnation.

The backlash led the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to remove Ponmudy from his post as Deputy General Secretary of the party, though he continues to serve as a cabinet minister. Amid mounting criticism, Ponmudy expressed remorse and issued a heartfelt apology.

“I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate words I used while speaking at an event organized by the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam. I immediately felt deep regret for the inappropriate remarks I had made. As someone who has been in public life for a long time, I am deeply sorry for this lapse in judgment. I regret that my speech caused hurt to many and created an embarrassing situation for them. I once again offer my heartfelt apologies to everyone who was hurt by my words,” Ponmudy said.

The remarks, reportedly made in the form of a joke targeting Shaivism and Vaishnavism, drew sharp reactions from political rivals and even members within his own party.

AIADMK leader Sellur Raju lashed out at Ponmudy, alleging a pattern of offensive behavior. “Minister Ponmudy has made it a habit to continually speak disrespectfully about women and marginalized communities,” Raju told reporters.

Echoing similar sentiments, AIADMK National Spokesperson Kovai Sathyan called Ponmudy a “disgrace to the public” and a “true representation of DMK’s ideology.” He added, “DMK leaders can go to any extent to mock religious beliefs and practices, especially those related to Hinduism.”

BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan also joined the chorus of condemnation, demanding Ponmudy’s removal from the Tamil Nadu cabinet. “He has no moral right to remain a minister. Removing him from just the party post is mere eyewash,” said Kesavan.

In a rare internal rebuke, DMK MP Kanimozhi also distanced herself from Ponmudy’s remarks. “Minister Ponmudy’s recent speech is unacceptable. Regardless of the reason for the speech, such vulgar remarks are condemnable,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).
