In a significant move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied a poll pass to Anantkumar Hegde, a six-time Member of Parliament from Karnataka, following his recent controversial remarks regarding the party’s electoral goals.
Anantkumar Hegde, known for his repeated controversial statements, stirred controversy when he suggested that the BJP’s target of securing 400 Lok Sabha seats was aimed at altering the Constitution. His comments sparked a political uproar, drawing criticism from opposition parties.
Accusing the Congress of manipulating the Constitution to suppress Hindus, Hegde advocated for a revision of the Constitution, stating that the current majority in the Lok Sabha was insufficient to bring about such changes.
While the BJP distanced itself from Hegde’s remarks, labeling them as his personal views, the party’s decision to deny him a poll pass underscores its stance against leaders who make inflammatory statements.
Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, a six-time MLA and former Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly, has been named as Hegde’s replacement in the BJP stronghold. This move reflects a broader pattern observed in the BJP’s candidate selection process, where individuals known for hate speech and controversial remarks are being sidelined.
Prior to Hegde, other BJP leaders such as Pragya Singh Thakur and Delhi MPs Ramesh Bidhuri and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, despite being sitting MPs, were also denied a poll pass due to their contentious statements.
The BJP’s decision to prioritize candidates with a track record of responsible and constructive discourse signals a shift towards promoting leaders who uphold the party’s values and principles without resorting to divisive rhetoric.
