New Delhi: The Congress party has formally written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding swift and strict action against BJP spokesperson Pintu Mahadev for allegedly issuing a direct death threat to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a televised debate.

The letter, dated September 28 and signed by senior Congress leader KC Venugopal, described Mahadev’s remarks as “cold, calculated and chilling”, stating that the threat went beyond political rhetoric and placed Gandhi in immediate danger. Congress emphasized that the statement was “not a slip of the tongue, nor careless hyperbole” but a deliberate incitement to violence that undermines constitutional guarantees and basic security.

Highlighting past threats, the party noted that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), responsible for Gandhi’s security, had previously flagged multiple threats to his life in letters addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, one of which was reportedly leaked to the media under “mysterious circumstances.” Against this backdrop, Congress argued that Mahadev’s remark during the News18 Kerala debate—“Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest”—could not be viewed in isolation and raised serious concerns about attempts to normalise violence against the Leader of the Opposition.

The party called the statement a brazen act of incitement, pointing out that similar threats and calls for violence have circulated on BJP-linked social media platforms, creating an atmosphere of hate that leaves Gandhi vulnerable.
