New Delhi: Tensions between the Congress leadership and the Central government escalated on Saturday after the Centre named Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor as part of its high-level diplomatic outreach concerning India’s ongoing conflict with Pakistan—despite the Congress party having not recommended him.
Tharoor was listed among seven Members of Parliament selected by the government to lead all-party delegations to key global capitals. These delegations aim to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and convey India’s stance following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent military response under Operation Sindoor.
However, shortly after the announcement, Congress’s General Secretary in charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, stated that Tharoor’s name was not among the party’s recommendations. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh clarified:
“The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, spoke with the Congress President and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Congress was asked to submit the names of four MPs for the delegations to be sent abroad to explain India’s stance on terrorism from Pakistan.”
According to Ramesh, Rahul Gandhi, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition, had recommended Anand Sharma, Gaurav Gogoi, Syed Naseer Hussain, and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the party’s official nominees. The Centre’s decision to override these suggestions and select Tharoor instead has caused considerable unease within Congress circles.
While the Congress leadership refrained from a direct attack on Tharoor, the snub has sparked internal discomfort and highlighted growing fault lines between the party and its high-profile MP.
In response, Tharoor offered a veiled statement that appeared to address the unfolding situation without naming anyone:
“When the national interest is involved and my services are required, I will not be found wanting.”
