Islamabad: In a significant revelation that reaffirms India’s claims of successful military strikes under Operation Sindoor, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly admitted that Indian ballistic missiles targeted multiple air bases in Pakistan—including the Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi—on May 10.
Speaking during a ceremony at the Pakistan Monument on Friday, Sharif disclosed that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir had informed him of the missile strikes in the early hours of the morning.
“At around 2:30 am on May 10, General Syed Asim Munir called me on a secure line and informed me that India’s ballistic missiles have hit Nur Khan air base and other areas,” Sharif said.
The Nur Khan air base, situated in Chaklala near Islamabad, is one of the most strategic facilities of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), housing its VIP transport squadron and coordinating logistical and strategic airlift operations, according to News18.
Sharif’s admission confirms weeks of speculation in international media regarding the extent of damage inflicted by India’s retaliatory airstrikes following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The Indian government had earlier claimed significant damage to Pakistani military infrastructure, which Islamabad had officially denied—until now.
Sharif also acknowledged that he was swimming on the morning of the strikes when General Munir contacted him again, this time regarding a ceasefire proposal from India.
“General Asim Munir said that we have given India a powerful response, but now they are seeking a ceasefire,” Sharif added, portraying the ceasefire request as a victory for Pakistan.
Interestingly, Indian defense officials later confirmed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) had reached out to his Indian counterpart to request a ceasefire after the strikes on multiple Pakistani air bases.
Sharif further stated that Pakistan responded using a mix of local defense technologies and Chinese-manufactured fighter jets, suggesting the scale of the confrontation was larger than previously acknowledged.
