Hyderabad: Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi has found himself at the center of a controversy following his remarks about wanting a grandson to continue his legacy. Speaking at the pre-release event of Brahma Anandam, the veteran actor jokingly lamented that his home feels like a “ladies’ hostel” due to being surrounded by his granddaughters.

“I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye… I’m scared that he might again have a girl,” Chiranjeevi said. His comments referred to his son, RRR star Ram Charan, who welcomed a daughter, Klin Kaara, with wife Upasana Konidela in 2023.

The statement has drawn sharp criticism from netizens, with many calling it outdated and misogynistic.

“Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter. In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising,” one user tweeted.

Another post read, “Dear Chiranjeevi garu, I respect you as an actor, but your statement implies that a legacy can only be carried forward by a male child. Did you truly mean that?”

Some also accused the actor of making a series of inappropriate remarks in recent times. “Past few days, Chiranjeevi is going south of his image—using vulgar words on stage, making controversial comments about girl children, and failing to support Pawan Kalyan when needed,” one user pointed out.

While Chiranjeevi’s comments may have been made in jest, they have sparked a larger debate about gender bias and societal expectations regarding heirs in the entertainment industry. The actor has yet to respond to the backlash.
