By now, you’ve probably seen the clip: Sonu Nigam, mid-surgery, singing Mohammed Rafi’s Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki while a team of doctors works around him.
It is the kind of moment that was always going to travel fast online — a music legend, an operating table and a song generations of Indians grew up listening to.
But the clip alone skips the more interesting part: why it happened at all, and why that particular song.
Sonu Nigam was undergoing treatment for a recurring growth on his left ring finger, the same one he said had been removed roughly four months earlier, only for it to return.
The singer has said he suspects the recurrence could be connected to an underlying arthritis-related condition, although there is no confirmed diagnosis yet and no clear plan for what happens if the growth returns again.
Why It Was a Rafi Song
Here is the part that actually explains the viral video: the operating theatre was not silent.
Nigam’s surgeon, Dr Nilesh Satbhai, is a longtime admirer of his work and had music playing during the procedure — specifically tracks from Rafi Resurrected, Nigam’s album with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in which he revisited a selection of Mohammed Rafi classics.
Some of those tracks contain stretches where the orchestration continues without vocals.
Partway through the surgery, one of those instrumental passages came on, and Nigam simply started singing along.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, the singer explained:
“As the surgery was happening, between some songs, there were a couple of songs that came without the voice. And as it came without the voice, the song was playing, but there was no voice. So, organically, I started singing.”

What Happened After
Once he started, Nigam did not stop at one song.
He said he sang two or three songs during the procedure, turning what could have been an ordinary surgical moment into something memorable for the doctors around him.
The medical team recorded the performance and later sent the clip to him, which is how the moment eventually found its way online.
Nigam told Hindustan Times: “So I sang a couple of songs. This is just one song. I sang about two, three songs for them. So it became a very endearing moment. All the doctors were really happy. And I also asked them if they wanted to record it; they could record it as a memory. So they recorded it and then sent it to me. And that’s when we posted it.”
Within days of the surgery, Sonu Nigam was back at work for the launch of his new song Chunni, with a birthday celebration already lined up on his calendar.
The viral clip may have looked spontaneous and extraordinary on its own. The story behind it is simpler — music was already playing, a familiar Rafi melody came on, and Sonu Nigam did what he has spent most of his life doing: he sang.
