Tel Aviv: Just hours after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire came into effect between Israel and Iran, tensions have flared up again as Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant accused Iran of violating the truce by launching missiles toward Israeli territory.
Defence Minister Israel Katz directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to “respond forcefully” and said that Iran’s actions were a “clear violation of the ceasefire agreed upon with U.S. mediation.” He added, “Israel will not tolerate threats to its sovereignty under any pretext.”
According to initial military reports, two missiles were fired towards Israel early Tuesday. Both were intercepted mid-air by Israeli missile defense systems, averting any damage or casualties.
Iran, however, denied the accusations, claiming no missiles were launched from its territory following the ceasefire. Iranian officials described the Israeli claims as “propaganda” aimed at justifying continued aggression.
Adding fuel to the fire, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich posted a blunt warning on social platform X, stating: “Iran trembles.” His remarks echo the growing sentiment within the Israeli leadership that the ceasefire may be unraveling even before it stabilizes.
The ceasefire, announced late Monday night by U.S. President Donald Trump, was hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough following 12 days of intense conflict. Trump claimed that both nations had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” shortly after Iran’s limited missile retaliation targeting a U.S. base in Qatar — an action that followed American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier welcomed the ceasefire, declaring it a “strategic victory” for Israel. “We have achieved our objective — neutralizing Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile threats,” Netanyahu said while thanking President Trump for his unwavering support throughout the conflict.
Despite initial optimism, Israel had issued a stern warning late Monday: “Any violation of the ceasefire will be met with full force.”
