BMC Unveils Record Rs 74,427 Crore Budget for 2025-26: Key Announcements and Major Developments

Mumbai: Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has presented its largest-ever budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, highlighting significant allocations for education, infrastructure, and public services. With a focus on inclusive education, urban development, and sustainable growth, the BMC’s budget promises transformative changes for the city.

In a major move, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani’s first budget sets a total size of Rs 74,427 crore, marking a 14.19% increase from the previous year’s revised budget of Rs 65,180 crore. The budget continues to be submitted under administrator rule, as the corporator’s term ended in March 2022. Here’s a breakdown of the BMC’s key highlights for the fiscal year 2025-26:

1. Education Focus:

  • Total Education Budget: Rs 3,955.64 crore (up by Rs 630 crore from last year).
  • Mission SAMPURN to enhance overall student development.
  • Purak Poshan Aahar (Supplementary Nutrition) for all students from Nursery to 10th Std.
  • Introduction of a Science Park and new English Language Labs in schools.
  • Cyber Literacy Project to educate students on safe internet usage.

2. Infrastructure Development:

  • Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP): Rs 5,545 crore allocated for seven Sewage Treatment Plants, expected to be completed by 2028.
  • Mumbai Coastal Road Project (Phase 2): Rs 4,000 crore for the extension from Versova to Dahisar.
  • Road Concretisation Project: Rs 3,111 crore to enhance road infrastructure, with 75% work planned for completion by next year.
  • Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR): Rs 1,958 crore for reducing travel time between Western Express Highway and Mulund.

3. Revenue & Sustainability Initiatives:

  • BMC aims to generate Rs 350 crore by assessing commercial units in slum areas for property tax.
  • SWM User Charges to fund waste management services.

4. Transport and Public Services:

  • BEST Bus Services: Rs 1,000 crore allocated for infrastructure improvements and purchase of electric buses.
  • Sewage Treatment Plants and Water Supply Projects to address growing urban challenges.

5. Healthcare Expansion:

  • BMC to open 25 more Aapla Dawakhana clinics and three physiotherapy centers to expand access to free healthcare.
