Mumbai: Water supply continued to be disrupted at the VIP areas around Malabar Hill and Pedder Road owing to a landslide that damaged water pipelines late on August 5. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now laying an alternative network of new water supply pipelines of 600 mm diameter for the entire locality, the assistant municipal commissioner (D-ward) Prashant Gaikwad told thenews21.
The water supply is expected to be restored to the area only by Saturday evening when the new network will be connected to BMC’s main water supply network. “As of August 7, we had laid about 150 mtr and another 150 mtr is yet to be laid post which it will be joined with the main pipelines. The new lines had to be laid as the old damaged lines could not be replaced due to the precarious nature of the hillock through which the lines were running through. The water supply network was connected to the area through the Malabar Hill reservoir atop the hill that is now cracked with a landslide. Water supply for the meanwhile is being provided with water tankers for the area,” Gaikwad informed.
A part of the N.S. Patkar Road, which had developed deep cracks due to the landslide, was cleared up for traffic by the BMC on Friday. The BMC said that the entire stretch of road can be opened only after the entire damaged retaining wall will be repaired, which is expected to take a few months. “We are getting a geological study done by a team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to study if the soil erosion there can be stabilised on the stretch before taking up repairs on the retaining wall,” he said. The entire locality of Nepean Sea Road, Pedder Road, Malabar Hill, Tardeo, Grant Road etc is complete disconnection of water supply within a day of unprecedented flooding on this stretch.
