Black Box of Crashed AI171 Flight Remains in India, Says Aviation Minister Naidu; Probe Underway by AAIB

Ahmedabad: In a reassuring statement aimed at putting speculation to rest, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu on Tuesday confirmed that the black box of the Air India AI171 flight, which tragically crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, is currently in India and is being examined by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

“There is no truth in the reports suggesting that the black box has been sent abroad for analysis. It is very much in India, and our own expert teams at AAIB are investigating it,” the minister said, addressing media queries during the Helicopters & Small Aircraft Summit 2025 held in Pune.

The AI171 flight, a Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-7 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, plunging into the BJ Medical College hostel complex in Meghani Nagar. The incident claimed 270 lives, including 29 people on the ground, with just one passenger surviving the crash.

The black box, recovered on June 13, contains two critical components — the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR). These devices will provide vital information about the final moments before the disaster, including pilot conversations, cockpit sounds, and technical flight data.

Minister Naidu emphasized that decoding such complex data is a highly technical process and cautioned against expecting immediate findings. “Let the AAIB conduct a thorough and professional investigation. We must allow them to go through the entire process,” he stated.

To ensure transparency and thoroughness, the Centre has set up a high-level inquiry committee, headed by the Union Home Secretary, and comprising senior officials from both the state and central governments. This committee has been granted full access to all relevant records — from flight data and ATC logs to maintenance reports and eyewitness testimonies — and has been asked to submit its final report within three months.

Naidu reaffirmed that the black box holds the key to understanding the exact sequence of events and will play a pivotal role in determining the cause of the tragic crash. “It is only through scientific investigation and evidence-based analysis that we can prevent such incidents in the future,” he added.
