The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra swiftly responded following the circulation of a viral picture showing its president, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, purportedly seated in a Macau casino. The incident triggered a scathing attack from Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut on Monday.
Addressing the controversy, Bawankule clarified on Monday that the viral picture captured him in a restaurant with his family post-dinner, denying any involvement in gambling activities. In retaliation, the Maharashtra BJP redirected the scrutiny toward Shiv Sena (UBT) by sharing a photo of Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, allegedly in a similar context during a meeting with football icon David Beckham.
“Our state president Chandrasekharji Bawankule has never gambled in his life. This area is where his family is staying. However, those who have faced gambling issues cannot perceive beyond that. Tell us the content in this glass, Sanjubhau, Aaditya?” tweeted Maharashtra BJP, sharing Aaditya Thackeray’s picture.
Earlier in the day, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction had posted an image of Bawankule, alleging his presence at a Macau casino and claiming a loss of Rs 3.50 crore in a single night.
Responding to Raut’s accusations, Bawankule clarified on social media, showcasing pictures of his family during their trip. “This is the hotel complex where I stayed with my family in Macau. The hotel houses a restaurant and a casino on the ground floor. The photo was taken while I was in the restaurant with my family after dinner,” stated the BJP leader.
