Mangaluru: A shocking incident unfolded on Thursday night in Mangaluru, Karnataka, when Suhas Shetty, a history-sheeter and former Bajrang Dal member, was brutally attacked and left for dead by unidentified assailants. The attack, which took place near a village on the outskirts of the city, occurred around 8:27 pm on May 1. Shetty, who was traveling with five others in a car, became the target of a violent assault when their vehicle was intercepted by two other cars.
According to police reports, five to six attackers emerged from the intercepted vehicles and struck Shetty with swords and other deadly weapons, leaving him severely wounded on the roadside. Despite being rushed to the nearby AJ Hospital, Shetty succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The brutal nature of the attack, captured in a video, has raised concerns and fueled tensions within the community. Following Shetty’s death, a large group of Hindu activists gathered outside the hospital, prompting a heavy police presence to control the situation. Prominent local figures, including BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Bharath Shetty, and other leaders from Hindu organizations, visited the hospital to offer their support.
In response to the growing unrest, the local unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has called for a bandh in Mangaluru on Friday, which will last from 6 am to 6 pm. To maintain law and order, security has been heightened around the hospital and other sensitive locations in the city.
Karnataka’s Home Minister, G Parameshwara, addressed the situation on Friday morning, emphasizing that the state government was treating the incident with utmost urgency. “Four teams have been formed to investigate this incident, and I have sent a senior ADGP-level officer to ensure peace is maintained,” Parameshwara said. “We are taking this attack very seriously, and we are committed to restoring peace in Mangaluru.”
