BJP’s Induction of Ex-Congress Leaders Redefines Assam Election Battle

The Assam Assembly Elections 2026 are witnessing an intense political transformation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party aggressively inducting former Congress leaders, turning the contest into what many describe as a battle of political identity. The strategy appears aimed not just at electoral gains but at weakening the Indian National Congress from within.

Big Defections Just Before Polls

The most dramatic developments came just days before nominations, with senior Congress leaders switching sides. Pradyut Bordoloi, a sitting MP and former minister under Tarun Gogoi, joined the BJP citing neglect in his previous party. He has now been fielded from Dispur, marking a major shift in his decades-long political journey.

Another key defection was Bhupen Kumar Borah, who resigned as Assam Congress chief and joined the BJP. He will now contest from Bihpuria, a seat he previously represented, completing a full-circle political transition.

Sitting MLAs Join BJP Camp

The BJP has also strengthened its position by inducting sitting MLAs like Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Sashi Kanta Das, who had been supporting the government despite being suspended from Congress. The upcoming election will be their first as official BJP candidates.

‘Class of 2021’ Now Core Leaders

Leaders who joined the BJP earlier have now become central to its strategy. Ajanta Neog, who switched from Congress in 2020, is now an established BJP face after winning the 2021 elections. Similarly, Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain have already proven their strength after earlier defections and are contesting again under the BJP banner.

Old BJP Leaders Feel Sidelined

The influx of former Congress leaders has created unease within the BJP’s original cadre. Several long-time party leaders have been denied tickets, including prominent names like Siddhartha Bhattacharyya and Nandita Gorlosa. This has led to internal dissatisfaction, with some workers feeling displaced by newcomers.

Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Model

At the centre of this political shift is Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose own exit from Congress in 2015 changed Assam’s political landscape. Since then, he has built a strong network of former Congress leaders within the BJP, turning them into key players in the party’s rise in the Northeast.

A New Political Reality in Assam

The 2026 elections are shaping up as more than just a contest between parties—they represent a deeper restructuring of Assam’s political identity. With leaders switching sides and party lines blurring, the BJP’s strategy is redefining the state’s electoral dynamics.

As the campaign intensifies, the outcome will determine whether this bold experiment of absorbing opposition leaders translates into long-term dominance or triggers further political churn in Assam.
