Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken legal action against his recent arrest and subsequent remand, approaching the Delhi High Court to challenge both. His legal team asserts that both the arrest and the remand order are illegal, and they are seeking his immediate release from custody. They have urgently requested a hearing from the Acting Chief Justice, aiming for Sunday, March 24.
Kejriwal was remanded to Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody until March 28 in connection with alleged irregularities and money laundering related to the Delhi Excise Policy 2022, which was ultimately scrapped.
AAP Seeks Urgent Intervention from Election Commission
In the midst of these developments, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has urgently sought an appointment with the Election Commission of India to ensure a fair electoral environment for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Atishi, a Delhi Minister, highlighted concerns about recent incidents affecting their campaign efforts.
According to Atishi, despite previous representations to the Election Commission, the AAP office was sealed, preventing Lok Sabha candidates and party leaders from conducting campaign meetings. Additionally, she reported an Income Tax raid on the home of one of their MLAs. Atishi emphasized the constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission to maintain a level playing field.
Opposition Bloc Raises Concerns with Election Commission
In response to Kejriwal’s arrest and other perceived instances of government targeting, the INDIA bloc, consisting of leaders from various opposition parties, submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India. The memorandum expressed concerns about the alleged misuse of central agencies by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to target opposition leaders.
The INDIA bloc urged the Election Commission to ensure that any further raids, investigations, and arrests are vetted and approved by the Commission or a committee set up under it. They also called for immediate action, including investigations against individuals and officers who have allegedly misused their positions to harass opposition leaders.
