New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday assured Parliament that the government has no objections to incorporating the Opposition’s dissent notes into the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. His remarks came as the report was tabled amid protests from the Opposition, who alleged that their dissenting views had been omitted.
The JPC chairman, Jagdambika Pal, presented the panel’s findings in the Lok Sabha after earlier tabling them in the Rajya Sabha. The Opposition claimed that their concerns were disregarded, prompting heated exchanges in both Houses.
Amit Shah’s Assurance Amid Opposition Sloganeering
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Shah stated, “Some members of the Opposition have raised objections that their dissent notes have not been fully included in the report. On behalf of my party, I would like to request that the disputes of the Opposition be included in the appropriate parliamentary procedure; my party has no objection to this.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also confirmed that dissenting opinions were incorporated after consultations with Opposition leaders. “Whatever issues were raised by the members of the Waqf Board who met with me, I have included them in the annexure,” Birla assured the House before adjourning proceedings.
Opposition Calls Report “Anti-Democratic”; Nadda, Rijiju Hit Back
Congress President and Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the JPC report, alleging that “dissent notes from Opposition members were removed,” branding the move “anti-democratic and condemnable.”
“It is not right to bulldoze our views. We will never accept such a fake report. If dissent views are missing, the report must be sent back and presented again,” Kharge asserted.
However, BJP President and Rajya Sabha Leader of the House, JP Nadda, dismissed the Opposition’s objections, calling their protest “irresponsible.”
“Debates and disagreements are part of democracy, but we must respect parliamentary traditions. Despite repeated requests from the Chairman, the Opposition’s behaviour has been reckless and deserves condemnation,” Nadda said.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also refuted claims of deletion, asserting that all dissent notes were included. “The Opposition is misleading the House. No part of the report has been removed or altered. These allegations are baseless,” Rijiju declared.
