High Court Pushes for Greater Accountability in Government Departments
In a significant observation on administrative functioning, the Allahabad High Court has suggested that the Uttar Pradesh government examine ways to make senior officials answerable for mistakes and lapses committed within their departments.
The court noted that accountability in governance should not stop at lower-level officers and that responsibility must extend upward through the administrative hierarchy.
Court Highlights Need for Administrative Reforms
The remarks came during proceedings related to a long-pending legal dispute involving a resident of Bareilly. While hearing the matter, the court observed that effective governance requires a system where higher-ranking officers are also held responsible for failures occurring under their supervision.
The bench emphasized that strengthening accountability could improve transparency, efficiency and public confidence in government institutions.
Passport Relief Granted to Petitioner
The observations were made while deciding a petition concerning the denial of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) required for passport issuance and renewal.
After reviewing the case, the court set aside an earlier order that had denied the NOC due to pending criminal proceedings against the petitioner. The court directed the concerned passport authorities to process the application in accordance with legal provisions.
Case Linked to Decades-Old Investigation
The dispute traces back nearly two decades to allegations of commercial tax-related irregularities. Investigators had registered cases alleging destruction of official records and misconduct involving government documents.
The matter led to criminal proceedings in Bijnor district, which later became a factor in the passport-related dispute.
