New Delhi: The 2025 Delhi Assembly election saw an unexpected factor influencing the results in key constituencies, particularly Mustafabad. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, did not win any seats but played a crucial role in the electoral outcome. By dividing minority votes, the party inadvertently helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secure a victory in Mustafabad, a constituency with nearly 40% Muslim population.

Vote Split That Helped BJP

AIMIM fielded two candidates in Delhi—Shifa Ur Rehman Khan from Okhla and Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad. Both candidates, currently in jail for alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots, finished third, pushing the Congress to fourth place.

In Mustafabad, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht won with a margin of 17,578 votes. AAP’s Adeel Ahmed Khan secured 67,637 votes, while AIMIM’s Tahir Hussain got 33,474 votes, and Congress’s Ali Mehdi managed only 11,763 votes. The division of Opposition votes gave BJP a clear path to victory.

In Okhla, AAP leader Amanatullah Khan retained his seat with 23,639 votes, but his winning margin dropped significantly due to AIMIM’s presence. BJP’s Manish Chaudhary finished second, while AIMIM’s Shifa Ur Rehman Khan secured 39,558 votes. Congress’s Ariba Khan ended up in fourth place with 12,739 votes.

BJP’s Internal Strategy Paid Off

Mustafabad’s win was also a result of BJP’s internal political maneuvers. Mohan Singh Bisht, a former Karawal Nagar MLA, had been sidelined in previous elections. However, after senior BJP leader Kapil Mishra was given the Karawal Nagar ticket this time, the party fielded Bisht in Mustafabad. The move worked in BJP’s favor, helping the party reclaim a seat in a traditionally challenging constituency.

AIMIM’s Impact on Minority Politics

Although AIMIM did not win a seat, its presence reshaped the election in key Muslim-dominated constituencies. By cutting into AAP and Congress votes, the party helped BJP strengthen its position in the Delhi Assembly.
