United States President Donald Trump is set to announce a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports, including those from Canada and Mexico, as part of his administration’s ongoing trade policy. Speaking aboard Air Force One while en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Trump confirmed that the new tariffs would take effect soon.
“Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25% tariff,” Trump told reporters. When asked about aluminium, he added, “Aluminum, too” would be subjected to the same penalties.
In addition to these tariffs, Trump revealed plans for “reciprocal tariffs,” which he is expected to announce by midweek. Under this policy, the US would impose import duties on goods from countries that have levied high tariffs on American exports.
“If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” Trump said, signaling a tougher stance on trade negotiations.
