Mumbai: In what could become one of the most significant cinematic tributes in Indian film history, Aamir Khan is set to portray Dadasaheb Phalke, the Father of Indian Cinema, in a biopic directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film aims to bring to life the incredible journey of the man who laid the foundation for what is today the world’s largest film industry.

Despite the legacy Dadasaheb Phalke holds — with the country’s highest film honour named after him — it is indeed surprising that mainstream Hindi cinema has never told his story on the big screen. That’s about to change.

“It’s surprising that no one in Hindi cinema has yet told us the story of cinema in cinema. Dadasaheb Phalke’s story is something that the nation needs to see on the screen,” a source associated with the project said to India TV.

Set against the backdrop of the Indian independence movement, the biopic traces Phalke’s visionary rise from obscurity to becoming a cultural pioneer, battling societal resistance, financial constraints, and technological limitations to make India’s first full-length feature film in 1913 — Raja Harishchandra.

The filming is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with Aamir Khan diving into preparations soon after the release of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. Top VFX studios from Los Angeles have already designed AI-generated visualizations to authentically recreate the era.

The film’s script has been in the works for four years, with Hirani collaborating closely with his long-time writing partner Abhijat Joshi, along with Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj. The team has reportedly dug deep into the archives, with invaluable help from Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, who shared rare anecdotes and personal insights.

Known for blockbusters like 3 Idiots, PK, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, the Hirani-Aamir duo is no stranger to impactful storytelling and box office gold. This project is already being described by insiders as “a cinematic homage India has waited over a century for.”
