Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aadtiya Thackeray on Monday wrote a letter to the BMC chief Iqbal Chahal demanding the scrapping of all the toll plazas at the entry points of Mumbai.
Thackeray stated that the toll plazas at all 5 entry points of the city, on the EEH and WEH have caused a lot of inconvenience and also caused traffic issues. Hence, he requested the civic body to consider about the closure of these toll plazas.
In the letter to Chahal, Aaditya said that scrapping the toll plazas will provide a big relief to the people of Mumbai. “The toll plazas at Mumbai’s entry points have started to create unnecessary nuisance with traffic snarls and pollution. Furthermore, it wastes the time, energy and money of commuters daily,” Aaditya said in his letter.
“The toll amount being collected is going to the MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) coffers, while the BMC maintains the roads. Why should Mumbaikars pay toll now to the MSRDC when the maintenance of these roads is with the BMC which already charges us a ‘street tax’ among many others? Mumbaikars cannot be charged unfairly twice for highways and bridges that are so badly maintained, even under MSRDC, for so many years,” the letter further stated.
As per news reports, the civic body, earlier this week floated a tender of ₹36 crore for repairing potholes on Mumbai’s roads. It had also given ₹2 crore to each of the 24 municipal wards in the city to carry out pothole repair works.
