Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was given a grand welcome by INDIA alliance parties upon him reaching the parliament for the first time after his disqualification was stayed by the Supreme Court. The Congress MP from Wayanad was welcomed with “Rahul Gandhi zindabad” slogans by Congress MPs.
On Monday (August 7), Rahul Gandhi’s membership was restored, just days after the Supreme Court put a stay on his conviction in the Modi surname defamation case. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had upheld Surat court’s order which had sentenced two years of imprisonment to Rahul for his remark “why do all thieves have Modi surname”, in a case filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. This had led to Rahul’s disqualification as MP from the house.
Rahul Gandhi’s presence in the house before the no-confidence motion is a huge boost for the opposition and Congress party. If the body-language of INDIA alliance parties today when Rahul arrived at the parliament was anything to go by, the MPs have surely got a boost from Rahul’s presence in parliament for the last but crucial week of the Monsoon session of parliament.
The no-confidence motion will be moved in the parliament on August 8 and 9 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak in the house on August 10, the last day of monsoon session of parliament.
The monsoon session of parliament this year has seen adjournments and chaos galore, as opposition parties persisted with their demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi issue a statement on Manipur violence in the parliament. The ruckus in Rajya Sabha also saw AAP MP Sanjay Singh suspended for the monsoon session of parliament. Several important bills such as Data Privacy Bill and the Delhi services bill were passed in the Lok Sabha and are likely to sail through smoothly in the Upper House of parliament as well.
