Anil Deshmukh flatly denies having alleged that IPS officers were planning to overthrow MVA government

Pune: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Sunday vehemently denied reports of him having made any sensational claims that a group of IPS officers in the state had attempted to overthrow the Shiv Sena, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Terming the news as “false”, Deshmukh contended that wrong statements had been attributed to him. He was referring to an interview he gave to the online edition of a vernacular daily a day before.

“This news is completely false… erroneous statements have been attributed to me. Please see the video clip of the concerned interview and you will realize that I had not said any such thing when I was asked to comment on whether there had been such a move planned by some IPS officers… I had only said that I cannot comment on such things openly,” said the Home Minister.

Following the interview, there were reports that Deshmukh had claimed that a plan to topple the MVA government was hatched by four to five senior IPS officers which  had been allegedly thwarted.  The Home Minister denied having made any such statement and had said that the police department worked together as one family.

“All police officers are working well in coordination with each other. Some officers have relationships with some politicians… But I cannot state anything openly. After all, I am the family head (of the State Police department) and all authorities and staff work together as one big family,” he had reportedly said in the interview, hinting that a section of authorities had close ties with the erstwhile Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Meanwhile, BJP leader of opposition in the Legislative Council, Praveen Darekar took potshots at Deshmukh’s interview. Demanding the resignation of Anil Deshmukh for hinting that some IPS officers were planning to topple the MVA government, Darekar said: “The Home Minister is giving such interviews to divert attention from the MVA’s failure to control the Covid-19 pandemic in Maharashtra…it does not behoove well of the Home Minister to speak in such a manner about his own police officers. Maharashtra’s police authorities know their limits and they will never contemplate such an act of overthrowing the government.”
