Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh may have denied having accused certain IPS officers of trying to topple the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, but the IPS officers activeness in political matters is not a secret. A senior IPS officer has come under the lens after Deshmukh acknowledged the talks of political activism of the men in uniform.

A source in the Home department says that the senior officer, who has roots in Bihar, is suspected of instigating the Bihar Police to file an FIR against Rhea Chakraborty in connection with the suspicious death of her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput. The actor was found dead in his house on June 14.

“The Mumbai Police was about to close the case after questioning several Bollywood personalities,” the source said. “Then suddenly the Bihar Police came in the picture. We suspect that this senior officer had contacted the Bihar Police on the behalf of a senior Maharashtra BJP leader to take action against Rhea.”

Deshmukh reportedly got furious when the senior officer’s Bihar move came into light. The source said he rushed to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar for his advice.

“Pawar already knew the dark side of the officer. He had inquired about the officer to a DGP level officer. The senior officer was transferred when his role in Sushant case became clear,” the source said.

The officer in question is known for his sharp eye on political developments rather than the crime. He has maintained excellent rapport with all the home ministers in the last two decades.

“It is his penchant for political maneuvering that kept him away from the coveted post of Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Mumbai.” The source also said that the government might form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate other allegations against him.
