A carefully planned operation by military authorities has uncovered an alleged impersonation racket in Uttar Pradesh, where a young man is accused of spending months presenting himself as a senior Indian Army officer.
The accused, identified as Aryan Verma, was detained in Shahjahanpur after investigators allegedly tracked his movements and activities across several locations where he was seen dressed as a high-ranking military official.
Months of Surveillance Led to Operation
According to officials, intelligence inputs first raised suspicion after Verma was reportedly spotted travelling in military-style vehicles and wearing a ceremonial uniform associated with senior Army officers.
Authorities subsequently began monitoring his activities and gathering evidence. Investigators suspected that he was portraying himself as a Brigadier and interacting with people while claiming to hold a prominent position in the armed forces.
Trap Laid at Defence Motivation Event
To verify the allegations, officials allegedly devised a plan involving a programme for defence aspirants.
Verma was reportedly invited to deliver a motivational address to candidates preparing for recruitment examinations. The event venue was located within the cantonment area, allowing security agencies to closely monitor his arrival.
As soon as he reached the location, personnel moved in and detained him for questioning.
Luxury SUV, Fake Documents Raise Questions
Investigators claim the suspect arrived in an SUV displaying symbols commonly associated with senior military officers.
During the operation, officials reportedly recovered several suspicious items, including identity cards believed to be forged. One of the documents allegedly carried markings linked to a prestigious defence medical institution.
Authorities are now examining the authenticity of all recovered materials.
Dummy Pistol and Other Items Seized
Searches conducted during the operation led to the recovery of additional items, including a dummy firearm and a ceremonial regimental cane.
Officials also questioned individuals accompanying the accused. Preliminary reports suggest that fake identification documents were recovered from one of the associates as well.
Investigators are examining whether the impersonation was intended to gain influence, access restricted areas or deceive people by exploiting the prestige attached to the armed forces.
Probe Expands
Security agencies are now trying to determine how long the alleged impersonation had been going on and whether others were involved.
The incident has sparked concern because of the level of planning allegedly involved, including uniforms, vehicles, identity cards and security-style accompaniments.
