Cracks In INDIA Bloc? Why AAP And DMK Stayed Away From Key Opposition Strategy Meeting In Delhi

Opposition Leaders Gather, But Two Key Allies Stay Away

A major strategy meeting of the INDIA alliance in New Delhi brought together leaders from 23 opposition parties on Monday, but the absence of two prominent regional players — the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) — sparked fresh debate about the coalition’s internal cohesion.

The meeting, held at the Constitution Club, was aimed at strengthening opposition coordination and preparing a roadmap for upcoming electoral battles, including the crucial 2027 state elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha contest.

AAP’s Absence Highlights Growing Friction With Congress

The decision of the Aam Aadmi Party to stay away from the gathering reflected its increasingly strained relationship with the Congress.

Party leaders argued that Congress has failed to effectively challenge the BJP and accused it of pursuing political strategies that weaken regional parties instead of strengthening opposition unity.

AAP also expressed dissatisfaction with Congress’ recent political moves, claiming that alliance partners have not always been treated fairly within opposition arrangements. The sharp criticism underscored the widening distance between the two parties despite their previous cooperation under the INDIA banner.

DMK-Congress Rift Emerges In Tamil Nadu

The absence of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was linked to growing tensions in Tamil Nadu politics.

Relations between DMK and Congress have deteriorated following Congress’ decision to align with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay.

DMK leaders have repeatedly alleged that the move amounted to a breach of trust, while Congress has maintained that its political decisions were communicated in advance. The disagreement has fuelled speculation about the future of ties between the two parties.

Signs Of Political Distance Becoming More Visible

Political observers have also pointed to recent developments in Parliament that suggest increasing distance between DMK and the wider opposition grouping.

The party’s request for a change in seating arrangements for its Members of Parliament was interpreted by many as a signal that it no longer wishes to be viewed as part of the opposition alliance in its current form.

While no formal announcement has been made regarding a complete separation, the move intensified discussions about the bloc’s internal dynamics.

Top Opposition Leaders Attend Crucial Meeting

Despite the absence of AAP and DMK, several senior opposition leaders participated in the deliberations.

The meeting was attended by Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray and Mamata Banerjee, among others.

Leaders from Left parties and several regional organisations also joined discussions focused on strengthening coordination against the BJP-led NDA.

INDIA Bloc Insists Alliance Remains Intact

Even as questions emerged over the absence of two significant partners, alliance leaders maintained that the opposition front remains united on major national issues.

Leaders stressed that the coalition would continue working together on matters relating to governance, economic concerns, constitutional issues and future electoral strategies.

Representatives from participating parties described the meeting as an effort to build consensus and prepare for upcoming political contests across multiple states.
