Senior TMC Leader Steps Down Amid Political Uncertainty
The Trinamool Congress has suffered another significant setback after veteran Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy announced his resignation from both Parliament and the party.
Roy, who had been one of the most experienced parliamentary faces of the Trinamool Congress for more than a decade, submitted his resignation to party chief Mamata Banerjee, adding to the challenges confronting the party following its recent electoral struggles.
Resignation Letter Contains Sharp Criticism
In his communication to the party leadership, Roy attributed his decision to what he described as public dissatisfaction over governance and administrative issues in West Bengal.
The former MP argued that voters had expressed their frustration over corruption allegations, concerns regarding women’s safety, and shortcomings in key sectors such as education, healthcare, employment, industry and law and order.
His remarks represent one of the strongest public criticisms made by a senior former Trinamool leader following the party’s recent political setbacks.
Veteran Leader Praises BJP’s Electoral Performance
Roy’s resignation letter also highlighted the electoral gains made by the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal.
According to the former parliamentarian, the BJP’s strong performance reflected changing political sentiments among voters. He further expressed confidence in the newly formed government, stating that it had begun implementing programmes aimed at the state’s development and reconstruction.
The comments have drawn attention because they mark a clear departure from the Trinamool Congress’s long-standing political position.
Political Turbulence Grows Within TMC
The resignation comes at a sensitive moment for the Trinamool Congress, which is already dealing with reports of internal divisions after its disappointing election performance.
Political observers note that questions over leadership, strategy and the party’s future direction have become increasingly prominent in recent weeks.
The developments have unfolded as Mamata Banerjee participates in opposition outreach efforts and discussions related to broader anti-BJP political coordination at the national level.
Speculation Over Possible Parliamentary Realignment
The exit of Roy has fuelled fresh speculation about the future of the party’s parliamentary wing.
According to political sources, several MPs are reportedly engaged in discussions regarding their future political course. Reports suggest that some legislators are exploring the possibility of forming a separate grouping, although no formal announcement has been made.
The situation remains fluid, and party leaders have not officially confirmed any plans for a split.
Anti-Defection Numbers Under Spotlight
The emerging political discussions have also brought attention to the numerical requirements under anti-defection provisions.
The Trinamool Congress currently holds a sizeable presence in both Houses of Parliament. Any formal recognition of a separate parliamentary group would require support from a specified number of MPs under existing rules.
As speculation continues, political analysts are closely watching whether the internal tensions evolve into a larger organisational challenge for the party.
