STF Tracks Down TMC Leader After Extensive Search
The West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) on Monday arrested Jahangir Khan, bringing an end to a manhunt that had lasted several days.
Officials said the operation was carried out near the Nepal border after investigators tracked his movements through intelligence-based surveillance. Law enforcement agencies had reportedly been monitoring possible routes and locations before executing the arrest.
Multiple Cases Registered Against Khan
According to police officials, Khan is facing several legal cases registered at the Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district.
Authorities stated that a total of seven First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged against the Trinamool Congress leader. The cases are linked to allegations ranging from election-related misconduct to intimidation and other violations reported during the recent local electoral process.
EVM Tampering Allegations Under Investigation
One of the key allegations being examined by investigators relates to claims of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) manipulation during polling in the South 24 Parganas region.
Police sources said the complaints include accusations that attempts were made to interfere with voting procedures by placing tape over specific symbols on EVM units. The allegations became a major political flashpoint during the election period and prompted authorities to launch a detailed probe.
Falta Constituency Came Under Spotlight During Re-Poll
Khan had contested as the Trinamool Congress candidate from the Falta constituency, a seat that later witnessed intense political scrutiny.
The constituency underwent re-polling on May 21 after complaints and allegations surrounding voting irregularities surfaced. However, Khan withdrew from the electoral contest shortly before the re-poll process was conducted.
The developments attracted significant attention from both ruling and opposition parties, turning Falta into one of the most closely watched constituencies during the elections.
Leader Reportedly Went Missing After Poll Controversy
Following the controversy, Khan reportedly remained out of public view for several days. Reports indicated that his office had been shut and his whereabouts were unknown as investigators intensified efforts to locate him.
The STF’s operation ultimately led officers to the Nepal border region, where he was apprehended and taken into custody for further legal proceedings.
BJP Secured Seat Amid Political Turmoil
The Falta constituency eventually went in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which registered a decisive victory in the re-poll.
The result added to the BJP’s tally and marked a significant outcome in a constituency that had been overshadowed by allegations, investigations, and political controversy.
Investigation Continues
Officials have indicated that further questioning and legal procedures will follow as investigators continue examining the allegations linked to the case.
The arrest is expected to remain a major talking point in West Bengal politics, particularly as authorities pursue inquiries into the election-related complaints that emerged during the recent polls.
