Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a major five-nation foreign visit from May 15 to May 20, covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, as India looks to strengthen global partnerships amid continuing uncertainty in international energy markets and global supply chains.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will focus on expanding cooperation in energy, trade, defence, investment, technology and innovation while also deepening India’s strategic engagement with Europe and the Gulf region.
UAE Visit to Focus on Energy and Strategic Cooperation
PM Modi will begin the tour in the UAE on May 15, where he is scheduled to hold talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The discussions are expected to centre on strengthening the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, energy cooperation and investment opportunities. The UAE remains one of India’s largest trading partners and hosts a large Indian diaspora population.
Officials indicated that ensuring energy stability and strengthening supply-chain cooperation will be among the key priorities during the discussions, particularly in the backdrop of tensions in the Middle East.
Netherlands Visit to Boost Technology and Defence Ties
In the second leg of the tour, Modi will travel to the Netherlands for his second official visit to the country. During the visit, he is expected to meet King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
India and the Netherlands are expected to discuss cooperation in sectors including semiconductors, green hydrogen, defence, innovation and water management technologies.
The MEA said the visit will help expand economic ties as the Netherlands continues to remain one of India’s important trade and investment partners in Europe.
Sweden Talks to Highlight Trade and Industrial Collaboration
From May 17 to 18, PM Modi will visit Sweden where he will hold bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The leaders are expected to explore opportunities for increasing bilateral trade and industrial partnerships. Modi and Kristersson are also scheduled to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Officials said discussions may include innovation, clean technology, manufacturing partnerships and green transition initiatives.
Historic Norway Visit Planned
PM Modi will then travel to Norway from May 18 to 19 to participate in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit and hold bilateral discussions with Norwegian leaders.
This will be Modi’s first visit to Norway and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Nordic country in more than four decades.
During the visit, he will meet King Harald V, Queen Sonja and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
India and Norway are expected to discuss clean energy, maritime cooperation, blue economy initiatives, trade expansion and investments under the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership framework.
The leaders will also address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit during the visit.
Italy Visit to Conclude Diplomatic Tour
The final stop of the tour will be Italy from May 19 to 20, where Modi is expected to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella.
India and Italy are likely to review ongoing cooperation under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029 and discuss expanding partnerships in defence, science and technology, trade and people-to-people relations.
The visit comes less than a year after Modi travelled to Italy for the G7 Summit and reflects the growing strategic engagement between the two countries.
