S Jaishankar briefing Parliament on Iran Israel war and West Asia crisis

S. Jaishankar will brief the Parliament of India on Monday regarding the rapidly escalating crisis in West Asia. The statement is scheduled when the second half of the Budget Session resumes in the Lok Sabha.

According to the revised list of parliamentary business, the External Affairs Minister will present an official update on the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

The government is closely monitoring developments in the region as tensions continue to escalate with fresh military strikes and retaliatory attacks reported across several countries.

Why Is the Safety of Indian Citizens in the Gulf a Major Concern?

India has one of the largest expatriate communities in Gulf nations, with millions of Indians living and working across the region. Because of this large diaspora, any military escalation in West Asia raises immediate concerns about the safety and evacuation of Indian nationals.

India Monitoring Safety of Citizens in Gulf

The Indian government has intensified diplomatic engagement with leaders across the Gulf region to ensure the safety of Indian nationals.

Narendra Modi has spoken with several regional leaders in recent days, including Haitham bin Tarik, Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During these discussions, the Prime Minister expressed concern about the worsening security situation and emphasised the need to protect the large Indian diaspora living and working in the region.

Talks Held With Saudi, Jordan and Bahrain Leaders

Modi also held conversations with several other Middle Eastern leaders, including Abdullah II of Jordan, Mohammed bin Salman and Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

During these talks, India reiterated its support for peace and stability in the region while seeking assurances regarding the security of Indian nationals living in these countries.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing as New Delhi remains concerned about the potential spillover effects of the conflict.

Conflict Intensifies After Strikes Inside Iran

The crisis escalated sharply after large-scale strikes by the United States and Israel targeted military installations inside Iran. Explosions were reported in multiple cities, including the capital Tehran.

Witnesses described powerful blasts that shook buildings while thick smoke rose above several areas of the city. Iranian authorities reported heavy casualties and confirmed the death of Ali Khamenei along with several senior political and military figures.

The developments have dramatically increased tensions across the Middle East.

Retaliatory Attacks Reported Across Gulf Region

Following the strikes, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting locations across the Gulf region.

Reports indicated that strikes affected key locations in the United Arab Emirates, including areas near Dubai International Airport and the iconic Burj Khalifa.

American military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait have also reportedly been targeted as the conflict spreads across the region.

Meanwhile, Israeli air defence systems intercepted several missiles while Israeli forces carried out strikes on positions linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Heavy Casualties and Global Economic Impact

The war has now entered its eighth day, with continued missile launches and counterstrikes reported across the region.

According to reports, more than 1,200 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict began. Casualties have also been reported in Israel, Lebanon and among US military personnel.

The escalating conflict has rattled global financial markets and pushed oil prices sharply higher. Analysts warn that prolonged fighting could disrupt shipping routes through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, carrying a large portion of global oil shipments from Gulf producers to international markets.

Iran Yet to Announce New Supreme Leader

Amid the ongoing turmoil, members of the Assembly of Experts have reportedly selected a successor to Ali Khamenei.

However, Iranian authorities have not yet publicly revealed the identity of the new Supreme Leader. Officials said the formal announcement will be made later.

The leadership transition adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile regional situation.

Why Is Jaishankar Briefing Parliament on the Iran–Israel War?

Jaishankar is expected to update Parliament about the rapidly evolving conflict, its potential impact on India’s strategic interests and the measures being taken to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region.

How Is India Responding to the West Asia Crisis?

India is engaging diplomatically with leaders across the Gulf while closely monitoring the situation. The government is prioritising the safety of its citizens and assessing the broader economic and security impact of the conflict.
