INDIA Alliance Picks Former Supreme Court Judge B. Sudershan Reddy for Vice President Race

New Delhi: In a significant move ahead of the September 9 Vice Presidential election, the INDIA alliance has chosen B. Sudershan Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge, as its joint candidate. The opposition bloc emphasized his reputation for integrity, judicial excellence, and commitment to social justice.

Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Reddy’s career, noting his service as judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court, and Supreme Court judge. Kharge highlighted Reddy’s dedication to protecting constitutional rights and favoring underprivileged citizens through his judgments. “He is one of India’s most distinguished jurists. Many of his rulings demonstrate how he upheld the Constitution and fought for social and economic justice,” Kharge said.

Describing the nomination as more than a political decision, Kharge called the upcoming contest an ideological battle, reflecting the unity of opposition parties behind a principled candidate. “All opposition parties agreed on this nomination, which is why B. Sudershan Reddy has been chosen as the joint candidate,” he added.

Kharge confirmed the next steps, stating that Reddy will file his nomination on August 21, and opposition MPs will convene at the Central Hall tomorrow at 1 pm to finalize support strategies.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien emphasized the coalition’s cohesion, saying: “All opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, are on board.”

The NDA, meanwhile, has already announced CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate, setting up a high-stakes contest between a politically seasoned NDA nominee and a respected, non-partisan jurist representing the INDIA alliance.
