New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday issued a strong statement following the horrifying terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including two foreigners and two locals. Singh condemned the attack as one of the deadliest incidents since the 2019 Pulwama blast, calling it a “cowardly act targeting a particular religion.”

“Yesterday, in Pahalgam, targeting a particular religion, terrorists executed a cowardly act, in which we lost many innocent lives. Every citizen of India is united against this cowardly act. I assure countrymen that in view of the Pahalgam incident, the government will take every necessary and appropriate step,” said Singh.

The attack occurred at the picturesque Baisaran meadow, a major tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, sending shockwaves across the country.

Reaffirming India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, the Defence Minister declared, “India will not only reach the perpetrators of this act but also the actors behind the scenes. The accused will soon see a loud and clear response, I want to assure the country.”

Earlier in the day, Singh chaired a high-level security review meeting to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal AK Singh.
